- Martin Luther King hijo. Today is Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. I asked our Kinders if they knew who he was. They did not. It is ok. They are 5 and 6 years old. We talked about him being a famous American. We talked about him doing important work for our country and our people. It is a very hard topic to introduce and talk about with 5/6 year olds on zoom. We did not have any conversation about his life work, how Black people were/are treated, his death because I need to be able to read their body language and they need to be able to ask questions and speak freely. Zoom meetings don't foster that kind of environment for Kinders. One of our activities today is getting to know Martin Luther King Jr. through our Let's Find Out magazine. Your child will have lots of questions for you. Here are the links of the read aloud and Kid President videos that we watched and one more that is a beautiful resource just in case your child would like to see them again. Martin Luther King Jr's words ring so true now as they did over 50 years ago. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
As I watched the events unfold in DC this week I started to think of all the things I experienced living there for 11 years. I taught for 5 years 4 blocks from the US Capitol. I drove by the Senate buildings, the US Capitol, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court every single day on my way to school and home to Annapolis. I was in lock down for 911 (at a school a little farther away), the DC sniper, Navy Yard shootings, and suspicious powders being sent in the mail. Oh and then there were hurricanes (Isabel, Sandy, Irene) and a 5.8 earthquake. The families I taught were also affected by gun violence on a weekly basis. There are so many ways our world affects our being.
Our Kinders are at a unique stage. According to Jean Piaget they are at the preoperational stage of development. They are developing language, memory, and imagination. Their intelligence is both egocentric (only from their point of view) and intuitive (based on how they think, not necessarily on facts). At this stage, they are learning to attach meaning to objects with language. They see images and hear adults talk about traumatic events but may not be able to put into words what it means or how it feels to them. Children thrive on predictability and security. They love routines. You may notice during morning meeting that if I forget to do the days of the week song or talk about the weather, they call me out! When we are in the building, you see even more of this. Kindergarten is basically structured chaos. LOL We have a very set routine but within that routine you see Kinders being Kinders. That is what they expect. They know they are safe and that their teacher has their back. Predictability and security are also important at home. They need you to be there for them, emotionally and physically. Here is where we have to help bridge that gap for our Kinders. If you have questions or comments please put them in the comment section so I can address them. I am also of the growth mindset. If you know more or want to add more resources/points of view please do so.
Make sure you are there to talk to them right when they have questions. Try saving phone calls, adult conversations, social media, emailing for after they go to bed. You may think they aren’t listening but they are. They are worried about their world and they are worried about you. You are the most important adult in their lives and if you are upset they worry. Focus on their feelings not yours. I know this is hard because you have a lot of feelings and thoughts running through your head. Children need to be heard. They need you to help them understand their feelings/thoughts when they don’t know how to put them into words. This isn’t a time for judgement or suggestions. It is a time for listening. Again try and stay close to your child. You are the most important person in their lives. Sometimes you don’t feel like that but no matter what in the end they really only want to be with you. Your child may show signs of anxiety. That is really hard because you will feel helpless. They might have physical symptoms, change in appetite and/or behavior, not want to go to school (even zoom meetings), become clingy. While some of these reactions can be scary for a parent who loves their child with all of their heart; love and nurture is a good place to start to help your child feel better. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s life. He cometido muchos errores y he aprendido de ellos.
Welcome to my first ever blog page. I am so excited and a bit nervous. I like to take on new adventures to help me expand my limits. I never want to stop learning. I have always been a learner- as a student, as a teacher, as a mother, as a grandmother. I have made many mistakes and learned from them. I have studied children in academia as well as in everyday life. It is time for me to share what I know and love the most... Kindergartners. Thank you for coming along with me on this journey. My intentions are to share with you what I know about child development: how Kinders learn, how they play, how they think, how they grow. If there is anything you want me to write about please feel free to let me know. Don't be scared to ask questions. I am here for you to learn about the magical world of Kindergarten.
